Suppliers need love

A wise man once said 'one who gives you free food should be loved' i am that man. The people's kitchen is supported by people who donate food (that isn't selling), they need some thanks.

Thanks !!

I owe some people thanks. Thanking someone is pretty simple and sincere, you just let the words speak for themselves. I'm going to use a black (simple) and white (sincere) theme. I still want some hippy curves but i'm going to tone the whole thing down and keep to one colour outside and one inside. Saying that i still want it to be a surprise when the colour changes as you open the card. Thanks.

Swedish Potato's

My mothers parents hail from Sweden. In fact she has repressed memories of head cheese and raw herring. Herrings are my favourite fish, so now i know where i get it from. I call these Swedish potato's (i can in no way verify their Swedishness) and they are one of my autumn favourites. Not quite roasts, not quite chips and not quite baked, the best of all three.

Ingredients

  • 2 crushed garlic cloves
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1/4 tsp sweet smoked paprika
  • pinch of hot smoked paprika/ chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 12 potato's (King Edwards wil do)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees C. Slice the potato's leaving around 5mm between each slice. I do this on a large sturdy wooden spoon so that i never cut through the potato completely.

Meanwhile blend the garlic, spices, salt and butter until smooth and finger over the top of each potato, making sure some gets between the slices. Bake for 35 mins uncovered until coloured and slightly crunchy on top.

What you didn't know about a fro

Never touch a fro you don't know.

First order

I've had to step up a gear to complete my first order. Perhaps my scalpel skills are not what they once were. The thing is i've got my eye on some new screw punch heads for intricate patterns and some spiral tea cake cases. I'm going to make a flourless chocolate cake for Freya's birthday and i want it to be perfect. That = a lot of cards so i'm gonna get started. I've ordered some envelopes and plastic casings as requested.

Book cover

Cover shot.

Today's the day

Today's the day. Its tropical out so there's lots of natural light for a bind. I'm going to make a menu book for the 'people's kitchen' at passing clouds. In keeping with the natural, foraged and surplus theme i'm going to use some random paper sheets i've found. There are two sheets of different colours so i've alternated them throughout the book.

I've written some text on the cover using a screw punch and then cut down some thick blotting paper to give the book some shape.

I folded all of the sheets before marking up the binding holes.

Roughly i measured out the binding thread (double the length of the spine), hands are useful.

I decided to leave a slight deckle to the pages to make the book feel really handmade. I made four holes with the screw punch and bound the book leaving around a half inch inside when i tied the thread incase it needs to be re-bound.

I've been developing my pincer grip to hold it all together while i thread.

I ran prit stick along the inside of the book, near the spine and on the cover piece. I left most of the cover not glued down so that its flexible and won't warp. Finished.

Screw Punch

Anything with a name like 'screw punch' has gotta be good right. Right. My favourite tool, freshly imported from Japan where it may or may not have its own anime. The craftmanship's amazing and its got a real economy of movement. You get the neatest binding holes, you'll ever see.
